  • Pole of Woodpeckers
It is a fact that the brain of a woodpecker is suspended like a swing set so that no damage will occur when hammering into the side of a tree. I learned this at a teacher’s retreat where each person was to identify with a forest animal. Since I taught art with severely disabled adults who often had behavior disorders, I needed to keep my brain swinging freely. So of course my totem became a woodpecker and my Studio has been named “The Laughing Woodpecker.” The pleated version is my favorite, and in this sculpture the three have each claimed one side of a weathered pole full of holes.
